Description

Type 1: Driving Accident (jump to: Driving Accident Subtypes)

The accident occurred due to loss of control of the vehicle due to non-adapted speed and/or erroneous evaluation of the run of the road (or the road condition or similar), without the involvement of other road users. Although most Type 1 accidents are single vehicle accidents as a result of uncontrolled vehicle movement, this could have led to a crash with another road user.

Type 2: Turning Off Accident (jump to: Turning Off Accident Subtypes)

The accident occurred due to a conflict between road user in a turning movement and a road user coming from the same or opposite direction (road user includes pedestrians) at crossings, junctions, access to properties or parking lots.

Type 3: Turning In / Crossing Accident (jump to: Turning In / Crossing Accident Subtypes)

The accident occurred due to a conflict between a turning in or crossing road user without priority and a vehicle with priority at crossings, junctions, access to properties or parking lots.

Type 4: Pedestrian Accident (jump to: Pedestrian Accident Subtypes)

The accident occurred due to a conflict between a vehicle and a pedestrian on the road. This accident type is still applicable when the pedestrian was not hit and is not applicable for cases where the vehicle was conducting a turning movement.

Type 5: Stationary Vehicle Accident (jump to: Stationary Vehicle Accident)

The accident occurred due to a conflict between a moving vehicle and a vehicle which is parking, has stopped or is maneuvering to park.

Type 6: Longitudinal Traffic Accident (jump to: Longitudinal)

The accident occurred due to a conflict between road users moving in the same or in the opposite direction (this accident type is applicable in the absense of an alternate accident type that is more appropriate and applicable).

Type 7: Other Accident (jump to: Other Accident Subtypes)

An accident that is not applicable to Types 1 – 6 (e.g. vehicle in a U-turn maneuver, a vehicle reversing, an accident between two parking vehicles, objects or animals on the road).

Note: To determine the accident type, only the conflict situation which led to the accident is important. If and how road users collided (the accident manner) is of no importance for the determination of the accident type. The mistake of the road users (the accident cause) is of minor importance.

For example, if an accident occurs due to a conflict between a vehicle and a pedestrian crossing the road, it is a pedestrian accident. This is independent of the following course of the accident (e.g. if the pedestrian was hit or not, if the car leaves the road due to an avoidance maneuver, or if the vehicle was hit by following traffic due to sudden braking) and independent of whom was at fault (e.g. if the pedestrian or the vehicle had priority).
